Welcome to Reception!
We would like to warmly welcome your child into Reception and are very much looking forward to watching them develop into independent learners as they start their journey through Red Hill Primary School.
At Red Hill we have three reception classes:
RB – Mrs Balaj (Mrs Budden and Ms Chiodini)
RT- Mrs Teck (Ms Young)
RS – Miss Shepherd (Miss Young and Ms O’Connor-Close)
Curriculum
During Reception, we use the Foundation Stage curriculum, working towards the Early Learning Goals. A carefully balanced timetable ensures that key skills are introduced whilst the environment is designed to foster independent learning. Children are free to explore new ideas and develop skills according to their own interests and motivations.
Throughout the year, the children become familiar with school routines and appropriate learning behaviour. This prepares them for a successful transition into Year One.
Please click below to see the curriculum map for EYFS as well as the topic web for this half term. These are working documents however, so they may change as we progress into the term. The EYFS Curriculum Meeting slides are also below.
In Reception we have been super excited to launch out new topic ‘Up in Space’! This half term we will be focusing on different aspects of space.
We have begun our Phonics, Reading, Writing and Mathematic teaching. We follow the Little Wandle programme for phonics in which the children are taught a collection of sounds (phonemes) at a rapid pace, therefore allowing them to blend (read) and segment (spell) a range of three letter words. In Mathematics, we will begin by concentrating on numbers and counting to ensure that all children are confident at recognising and writing numbers to 10 and counting amounts to 10. We follow the White Rose scheme of work and also Number blocks.
Reception Outdoor Learning Area (ROLA)
We are very lucky at Red Hill to have an amazing, outside learning environment. In this area we have a sandpit, climbing equipment, reading area, role play areas, water exploration area, English, Maths, Construction and Creative areas. This space allows the children to transfer their learning and skills from the classroom, to their outside activities.
Independent Learning Opportunities
Teachers set up the classrooms with a range of exciting and engaging activities that are practical and multi-sensory. Activities are linked to the half termly topic or the key text for the week. Children have a wide range of resources in the classrooms that they can access freely to support their independent learning activities. Activities are set up to provide children with opportunities to practise their speaking and listening skills and encourage them to practise reading and writing throughout the day.
