Geography

Building

Bright

Futures

At Red Hill Primary School, our primary goal is to spark curiosity and enthusiasm about the world, its creation, development, and the profound impact of human actions on its future. Aligned closely with the expectations of the National Curriculum in geography, we strive to cultivate a comprehensive understanding of the world we inhabit. Our aim is to instill in students a heightened awareness of the valuable lessons embedded in past geographical events and human activities, shaping the world as we know it today.

To achieve this, we offer students diverse opportunities to engage with geography through primary and secondary sources, captivating educational visits, and guest speakers seamlessly integrated into our Pioneer Passport program. Geography is intricately woven into our IPC topics, leveraging our local area and knowledge to breathe life into the thrill of exploration. Students not only absorb geographical concepts but also learn to effectively communicate their knowledge using specialized vocabulary, maps, and honing fieldwork skills. We prioritize creating cross-curricular connections with other subjects to enhance the depth and breadth of their learning experiences.

A high-quality geography education should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.”(National Curriculum 2014)

IPC

We implement the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) to teach geography, allowing children to interpret periods and events confidently. Through IPC units, students explore:

  • collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork
  • interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams and globes
  • communicate geographical information in a variety of ways

The curriculum integrates with the National Curriculum, ensuring students meet statutory requirements creatively.

Our geography curriculum encourages students to:

gather information from a variety of sources (including books, video, internet, drama and role play, visiting speakers and trips)

read and use maps and atlases of the local area as well as the wider world

place events, people and changes into chronological order

describe and identify reasons for and results of geographical events

investigate the causes and consequences of natural disasters

understand the positive and negative impact that human action can have on the world around us

The curriculum progresses through Key Stages, enabling students to build on prior learning.

Geography in EYFS

In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), geography skills are taught through knowledge and understanding of the world. They observe, find out about, and identify features in the place they live and the natural world. They find out about their environment, and talk about those features they like and dislike through exploration and investigation.

Personal goals

We emphasize eight IPC Personal Goals at Red Hill, including:

  • Enquiry
  • Resilience
  • Morality
  • Communication
  • Thoughtfulness
  • Cooperation
  • Respect,
  • Adaptability

These goals are integrated into learning tasks, fostering holistic development. The IPC Learning Goals encourage students to understand various geographical perspectives, cope with unfamiliar situations, approach tasks confidently, suggest new ideas, and be at ease in different situations.

Following the IPC enables us to approach geography topics creatively while covering National Curriculum skills. As an international scheme, it ensures diversity is addressed in our teaching
